Wake County Animal Care,
Control and Adoption Center

The Wake County Animal Care, Control and Adoption Center (Wake County Animal Center) is the community animal shelter operated by Wake County Government that receives all lost, stray, abandoned and surrendered animals from all municipalities and unincorporated areas of Wake County.
The original facility opened in 1996 and was designed to include 140 dog kennels and 100 cat kennels. In 2010, the shelter was expanded and now provides consolidated animal sheltering. It is the second largest animal care facility in North Carolina, and one of the largest in the southeastern United States. The Wake County Animal Center specializes in the rescue and adoption of pure- and mixed-breed cats and dogs, as well as birds, reptiles, rodents and others. Each year, the Animal Center receives approximately 17,000 animals that are looking for second chances. As a result of the Center's program offerings, including the successful pet fostering program, strategic community partnerships, staff and volunteers, the Wake County Animal Center has found forever homes for thousands of animals.
Throughout the year, Wake County residents and their pets also take advantage of the services and activities offered in their communities through the Wake County Animal Center, such as rabies clinics, microchip clinics, low-cost spay/neuter services through the Center's partnerships with other organizations, on-site adoption events and more.
